Tata Punch
India's most affordable SUV, big on attitude
Tata Punch review
The Tata Punch slots below the Nexon as a micro-SUV built on the same ALFA platform as the Altroz. It pairs genuine SUV looks and a tall stance with a city-friendly footprint, making it one of the cheapest ways into the SUV segment. A 5-star Global NCAP rating gave it instant credibility, and strong sales have made it one of India's best-selling cars month after month since launch.
The Punch's biggest draw is how much SUV it delivers for the money. At under four metres long it threads through tight city lanes easily, yet the high seating, 187mm ground clearance and chunky cladding make it feel far more substantial than its price suggests. The cabin is airy and well packaged, with a flat floor at the rear and decent headroom, though three adults across the back is a squeeze on longer trips.
Under the bonnet sits a single 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol making 88bhp. It is honest and refined at city speeds but runs out of breath on the highway, where overtakes need planning and downshifts. The 5-speed manual is light and easy, while the AMT automatic suits stop-go traffic despite the usual head-nod between shifts. There is no turbo-petrol or diesel option, so enthusiasts looking for punch will feel short-changed, and a fully loaded CNG variant trades boot space for running-cost savings.
Ride quality is a highlight. The suspension soaks up broken roads and speed breakers with confidence, and the tall tyres add to the cushioning. Steering is light for parking but firms up acceptably at speed. The infotainment, semi-digital cluster and auto climate control on top trims feel a class above the price, although features like a sunroof, rear wiper and rear camera are reserved for higher variants or missing entirely.
Where the Punch truly justifies itself is safety and peace of mind. The 5-star Global NCAP crash score, dual airbags as standard and Tata's solid build give buyers genuine reassurance that rivals struggle to match at this price. Service costs are reasonable and the after-sales network is wide, making it a sensible long-term ownership proposition for first-time and budget buyers.

Owner reviews
Feels safe on every drive
I bought it mainly for the 5-star rating and it has not disappointed. The ride over Mumbai's potholes is genuinely impressive and parking it anywhere is effortless. Only wish it had a bit more pull on the expressway.
Perfect first car
As a new driver the high seating and easy visibility gave me a lot of confidence. The AMT is smooth enough in city traffic once you get used to lifting off the throttle. Mileage hovers around 16-17 kmpl in the city for me.
Great value but underpowered
Build quality and ride are top class for the price and service has been hassle-free. The engine does feel strained with four people and AC on uphill roads. For pure city use though, I have no real complaints.

Tata Punch — frequently asked questions
Is the Tata Punch safe?
Yes. It scored a full 5 stars for adult occupant protection in Global NCAP testing and gets dual front airbags, ABS with EBD and ISOFIX mounts as standard across the range.
Does the Punch get a diesel engine?
No. It is offered only with a 1.2-litre petrol engine, with an additional factory-fitted CNG option on select variants. There is no diesel or turbo-petrol.
What mileage does the Punch deliver?
The petrol manual returns a claimed figure of around 20 kmpl, with real-world city economy closer to 14-17 kmpl. The CNG variant is more economical on running costs.
Is the Punch good for highway trips?
It is comfortable and stable, but the naturally aspirated engine feels strained for quick overtakes with a full load. It is best suited to city use with occasional highway runs.
Manual or AMT — which should I buy?
Choose the AMT if you spend most of your time in heavy city traffic. The manual is more responsive and slightly more fuel-efficient if you enjoy driving.
How much boot space does it have?
The petrol version offers a usable 366 litres, among the best in its class. The CNG variant loses significant boot space to the cylinder.
