Renault Kiger review

The Renault Kiger is a sub-4-metre compact SUV built for buyers who want a tall, butch-looking car without stretching past the city-friendly price band. It offers two 1.0-litre petrol engines, a roomy cabin, and one of the largest boots in its class. Renault leans on aggressive pricing and a long feature list to win value-focused shoppers, though brand service reach and resale remain the usual question marks for many.

Visually, the Kiger punches well above its segment. The split-headlamp face, chunky cladding and 16-inch wheels give it real SUV stance, and the LED daytime-running signature looks smart at night. Inside, the cabin is functional rather than premium, with hard plastics dominating, but the layout is sensible and the 20.5-litre cooled glovebox and clever storage cubbies are genuinely useful for daily life. The 405-litre boot is among the biggest you will find under four metres.

The naturally aspirated 1.0-litre engine is adequate for city commuting but feels strained when fully loaded or climbing inclines, and it needs to be revved hard. The 1.0 turbo is the one to pick: 99 bhp and 160 Nm make it genuinely peppy, and the CVT version is smooth in traffic, even if it drones under hard acceleration. The five-speed manual is light and easy. Ride quality is absorbent over broken roads, though there is some body roll at speed.

On features, the Kiger is strong for the money. Top trims get a wireless-Apple-CarPlay/Android-Auto touchscreen, automatic climate control, a digital instrument cluster, PM2.5 filter and an Arkamys-tuned sound system. The big caveat is safety: the Kiger scored a modest result in Global NCAP's older protocol, and only the higher variants get four airbags, so safety-first buyers should choose carefully.

Where the Kiger asks for compromise is in perceived quality and after-sales confidence. Some plastics rattle over time, and Renault's service network is thinner than Maruti's or Hyundai's in smaller towns. Resale value also trails the segment leaders. None of this is a dealbreaker, but it should factor into the decision for buyers planning long ownership.

Our verdict — The Kiger is a genuinely value-packed compact SUV that looks the part and offers strong space, a punchy turbo option and a generous feature list for the price. Choose the turbo variant for the best experience, and accept that resale and service reach are weaker than the segment leaders. For budget-minded buyers who shop on equipment and styling, it makes solid sense.

Turbo CVT is a city gem

I drive mostly in Bengaluru traffic and the turbo CVT is so smooth and effortless. Mileage settles around 14-15 kmpl in the city, and the boot easily swallows a weekend's worth of luggage. Wish the plastics felt a bit nicer.

Great value, average service

For the price I got a sunroof-free but loaded car with wireless CarPlay and a digital cluster, which felt like a steal. My only gripe is the nearest service centre is far and bookings take time. The NA petrol feels slow with four people on board.

Reliable daily driver

Two years in and it has been trouble-free for my daily 40 km commute. The ride soaks up our terrible roads nicely and the cabin is genuinely roomy for a small SUV. A couple of minor rattles have appeared, nothing serious.

Alternatives to the Renault Kiger

Renault Kiger — frequently asked questions

Which Kiger engine should I buy?

If your budget allows, pick the 1.0 turbo. It makes 99 bhp and 160 Nm, feels noticeably quicker than the naturally aspirated motor, and is the better choice for highway runs or a fully loaded car.

Is the Kiger available as an automatic?

Yes. The naturally aspirated engine offers an AMT, while the turbo engine is paired with a smoother CVT automatic that suits city driving well.

What is the real-world mileage?

Expect roughly 18-21 kmpl on the highway and around 13-16 kmpl in city traffic, depending on the engine and how you drive. The ARAI figure is higher than typical real-world numbers.

How safe is the Renault Kiger?

It scored a moderate result in Global NCAP's older test protocol. Higher variants add more airbags and electronic stability control, so safety-conscious buyers should choose the top trims.

Does the Kiger have a sunroof?

No, the Kiger does not offer a sunroof in any variant, which is one area where some rivals have an edge.

How does the Kiger compare on running costs?

Petrol-only running costs are reasonable thanks to good efficiency, and service intervals are competitive. Resale value, however, tends to be lower than segment leaders like Maruti and Hyundai.
