Hatchback Cars

8 hatchback models.

Hatchbacks built the modern Indian car market and still make the most sense for city driving. A short body is easier to park in tight lanes, cheaper to insure and cheaper to run, and the tailgate opens onto a boot that swallows more than the shape suggests once the rear seats fold.

CarQuill India currently tracks 8 Hatchback models. Prices run from ₹5.80 Lakh for the Tiago up to ₹44.90 Lakh for the Cooper. Models come from Maruti Suzuki, Mini, MG, Toyota and Tata. Fuel options across the range include petrol, cng, electric and petrol (cng). Every model here offers an automatic.

What to weigh up before you buy

Look closely at engine choice. The small three-cylinder petrols are frugal but get noisy when worked hard, while turbo-petrol versions are much quicker for a modest fuel penalty. Factory-fitted CNG is worth considering if your daily running is high, though it eats most of the boot. Crash-test scores in this class vary more than in any other, so check the rating for the exact variant.
