Lexus ES review

The Lexus ES is the brand's front-wheel-drive luxury sedan, built for buyers who prize a hushed cabin and effortless daily comfort over sporting reflexes. It shares much with the Toyota Camry but layers on richer materials, sharper sound insulation and a longer warranty. Most shoppers gravitate to the ES 300h hybrid, which pairs strong fuel economy with smooth, unstressed acceleration. It is a calm, dependable alternative to flashier German rivals.

On the road, the ES feels engineered around serenity. The hybrid powertrain delivers its 215 horsepower in a relaxed, linear way, and the CVT keeps revs low so the cabin stays quiet at highway speeds. It is not quick in the sporting sense, but it never feels strained, and real-world economy near 44 MPG is genuinely impressive for a car this size and plush.

Inside, the ES earns its luxury badge. Seats are wide and supportive, the materials feel a clear cut above the mainstream, and road and wind noise are kept admirably distant. Rear-seat space is generous for adults, and the trunk is usefully large. The infotainment system, now a proper touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, finally fixes the awkward trackpad of older cars, though the menus still take some learning.

The trade-offs are familiar. Front-wheel drive limits all-weather traction unless you choose the available all-wheel-drive variant, and the ES prioritizes ride comfort over handling engagement, so keen drivers will find it soft. The F Sport trims firm things up cosmetically and slightly dynamically, but this remains a cruiser, not a corner-carver.

Value is a strong suit. Standard safety technology is comprehensive, reliability records are excellent, and Lexus dealer service consistently ranks near the top. For a buyer who wants understated comfort and low running costs rather than badge flash or back-road thrills, the ES makes a quietly compelling case.

Our verdict — The Lexus ES 300h is one of the smartest comfort-first luxury sedans you can buy, blending a serene cabin, strong hybrid economy and bulletproof reliability. It is not for drivers chasing excitement, but for everyone else it is an easy, sensible recommendation.

Quiet and easy to live with

I commute 60 miles a day and the ES 300h sips fuel while keeping the cabin library-quiet. It isn't sporty at all, but I stopped caring after the first week. Comfortable, smooth and nothing has gone wrong.

Comfort over flash

The seats and ride are the best part, perfect for long drives with my family. The screen took a while to figure out and I wish the base car had all-wheel drive standard. Still, mileage in the low 40s is fantastic.

Reliable and refined

Two years in with zero issues beyond routine service, which is why I bought a Lexus. It feels more expensive inside than it costs. If you want a car that just works and pampers you, this is it.
