Kia EV9
Electric family hauler built without compromise
Kia EV9 review
The Kia EV9 makes a bold case that electric family haulers don't have to sacrifice practicality for range. A genuine three-row SUV built on Kia's E-GMP platform, it stretches nearly 197 inches to accommodate seven passengers with real cargo space to spare. EPA-rated at up to 304 miles in rear-wheel-drive form, it charges at up to 230 kW on a DC fast charger and can even power camping gear via its vehicle-to-load outlet.
Kia's EV9 arrives as the brand's most ambitious vehicle yet, occupying the large electric SUV segment alongside rivals that routinely cost tens of thousands more. Starting just under $55,000, it challenges the idea that premium three-row EV ownership requires a luxury badge. The exterior is all angular planes and deliberate creases, nothing timid about the silhouette, and the interior matches that assurance with a nearly smooth panoramic display bar housing a 12-inch instrument cluster and a 12-inch center touchscreen. Materials quality throughout feels a full segment above the price tag. Rear-wheel-drive Long Range models return an EPA-estimated 304 miles, which stands among the best figures in the three-row segment. AWD variants deliver 379 horsepower and a 4.4-second 0-60 mph run at the cost of roughly 30 miles of range, settling around 270 miles. Kia's 800-volt electrical architecture is the practical headline here: a compatible 230-kW DC fast charger takes the battery from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 24 minutes, a genuinely road-trip-friendly number for a vehicle with three rows of occupants and luggage. Kia also bundled access to multiple charging networks and includes a Tesla Supercharger adapter on recent units. Inside, the EV9 earns its family-hauler credentials with a third row that realistically fits adults up to about five-foot-ten, a distinction that separates it from many ostensible three-row crossovers where the rearmost bench is sized for small children only. The 122-inch wheelbase makes that legroom possible without compromising the second row. Upper trims add heated and ventilated captain's chairs for row two, dual wireless charging, a refrigerator-ready 12V outlet, and up to 3.6 kW of vehicle-to-load power through a built-in outlet, enough to run a camp setup or power tools at a job site. Road noise suppression is exceptional across all trims, aided by acoustic laminated glass and active noise cancellation on higher configurations. The EV9 does have real tradeoffs worth understanding before signing. The large footprint, nearly 197 inches long, can be awkward in dense urban parking, and the third-row seat folds flat rather than disappearing into the floor, creating a stepped load surface that complicates sliding long cargo. The layered infotainment menu structure occasionally demands extra taps for straightforward adjustments. Most significantly, the majority of EV9 units do not currently qualify for the $7,500 federal EV tax credit due to battery-pack sourcing requirements, though Kia's Georgia assembly operation is changing that picture for later production runs.
Pros & cons
What we like
- Up to 304 miles EPA-rated range on RWD Long Range trim
- 800-volt architecture enables 10-80% charge in ~24 minutes
- Third row genuinely accommodates adults
- Vehicle-to-Load exports up to 3.6 kW for appliances or camping
- Competitive pricing against luxury-segment rivals
What could be better
- Most trims ineligible for $7,500 federal EV tax credit currently
- Third row folds flat rather than flush-floor, creating a load step
- 197-inch length is unwieldy in tight urban environments
- Infotainment sub-menus require too many taps for common functions

Owner reviews
Best road-trip EV I've owned
We drove from Chicago to Nashville and stopped once to fast-charge, 22 minutes and we were back on the road with plenty of range to spare. The third row actually fits my teenage kids without complaints, which I didn't expect from anything at this price. Only gripe is the raised cargo floor when the third row folds.
Stunning interior, charging network still maturing
The interior quality feels a full class above the price, the panoramic screen and near-silent cabin are genuine highlights I notice every commute. I'm docking a star because two of my planned road-trip charging stops ran into unavailable stalls. Day-to-day home charging works perfectly and I'm at 80 percent every morning.
Makes the luxury SUVs look overpriced
I cross-shopped the EQS SUV and Escalade IQ seriously before walking away from both for the GT-Line. You get ninety percent of the experience at sixty percent of the cost. The V2L feature alone sold me. I've already powered a full camp setup on two weekend trips and it performed flawlessly.

Kia EV9: frequently asked questions
Does the Kia EV9 qualify for the federal EV tax credit?
Most EV9 units sold in the US through 2024-2025 do not qualify for the $7,500 federal EV tax credit because the battery packs are manufactured in South Korea rather than North America as required by the Inflation Reduction Act. Kia has begun assembling EV9s at its West Point, Georgia facility, which may make those specific units eligible. Verify the Vehicle Identification Number against IRS eligibility guidelines at the time of purchase.
How long does it take to charge the Kia EV9?
On an 800-volt DC fast charger rated at 230 kW, the 99.8 kWh long-range battery charges from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 24 minutes. Using a Level 2 home charger at the EV9's maximum 11 kW AC onboard rate, a full charge from near-empty takes around 9 to 10 hours, making overnight charging the standard home routine.
Is the EV9's third row usable for adults?
Yes, meaningfully so. The EV9's 122-inch wheelbase creates enough interior length to give third-row passengers around 34 inches of legroom, which accommodates adults up to roughly five-foot-ten without excessive crouching. Second-row ingress and egress is also better than average because the seat slides and reclines to create a wider opening.
What does Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) mean on the EV9?
V2L turns the EV9 into a mobile power source by exporting up to 3.6 kW of 120-volt AC electricity. A built-in outlet sits under the second-row floor mat for convenient indoor use, and an adapter connects to the charging port for outdoor use. This is enough capacity to run a refrigerator, power tools, camping appliances, or charge multiple devices simultaneously.
Which EV9 trim offers the best value?
The Wind trim hits the sweet spot for most buyers: it adds the panoramic sunroof, head-up display, heated second-row seats, and dual-zone rear climate controls over the Standard trim without the large price jump to Land or GT-Line. Buyers who need AWD traction or want the fully loaded cabin should consider the Land, which adds all-wheel drive and higher-grade interior materials at a reasonable premium over Wind.
How does cold weather affect the EV9's range?
Like all battery-electric vehicles, the EV9 experiences range reduction in cold temperatures, expect roughly 15 to 25 percent less range when ambient temperatures drop below freezing. Kia mitigates this with a heat pump system and battery preconditioning, which warms the pack to optimal temperature while still plugged in before departure. Scheduling preconditioning in the Kia Connect app preserves battery range that would otherwise go to cabin heating.
