Maruti Suzuki Brezza review

The Maruti Suzuki Brezza is the carmaker's compact SUV built for everyday Indian roads. The current generation, launched in 2022, swapped the old boxy look for a more upright, chunkier design and added a sunroof, bigger touchscreen and a head-up display. Under the bonnet sits a 1.5-litre petrol with mild-hybrid tech, paired with either a manual or a six-speed automatic. A factory-fitted CNG option keeps running costs low for high-mileage owners.

The Brezza plays it safe, and that is precisely why so many buyers trust it. The 1.5-litre petrol is smooth and unstressed in city traffic, with enough pull for daily commutes and the occasional highway run. It is not quick, and the engine gets vocal when pushed hard, but for the school-run-and-office routine most owners follow, it does the job without fuss. The six-speed torque-converter automatic is a sensible, easy-to-live-with choice, though it can feel a touch lazy when you want a sudden burst of speed.

Inside, the cabin feels well screwed together and sensibly laid out. The 9-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a sunroof, ventilated front seats on top trims and a head-up display lift the equipment count above the old car. Space is adequate rather than generous; four adults travel comfortably, and the 328-litre boot swallows a weekend's luggage. The plastics are hard-wearing but plain, and rivals offer plusher materials and a more upmarket ambience.

Where the Brezza shines is in ownership maths. Maruti's vast service network, cheap spares and strong resale value make it one of the most stress-free cars to run. The mild-hybrid petrol returns a real-world 14-16 kmpl, and the CNG variant slashes fuel bills further for those who clock big miles. Safety has improved too, with six airbags, ESP, a rear camera and ISOFIX mounts as standard or near-standard across the range.

The trade-offs are familiar Maruti ones. There is no diesel and no turbo-petrol, so enthusiasts looking for punch will be left wanting. The ride is composed but can feel firm over sharp bumps, and feature-hungry buyers may find rivals like the Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet more generously kitted. None of this dents the Brezza's core appeal: a no-nonsense, efficient, easy-to-own compact SUV.

Our verdict — If you want a fuss-free, fuel-efficient compact SUV with rock-solid resale and the widest service network in India, the Brezza is hard to beat. It won't thrill you, but it will rarely let you down. Pick the automatic for the city and the CNG if running costs top your priority list.

Perfect city companion

I bought the ZXi AT for daily Bangalore traffic and it has been brilliant. The automatic makes crawling through jams effortless and the mileage is around 15 kmpl in the city. Service costs are genuinely low compared to my old car.

Frugal and dependable

We went for the CNG variant and the running cost is unbelievable, barely a couple of rupees per kilometre. The boot space drops a bit with the CNG tank, but for a family of four it still works fine on weekend trips.

Solid but not exciting

The Brezza does everything well but nothing stands out. The engine feels strained on highway overtakes and the plastics could be nicer. That said, it is reliable, comfortable and the sunroof is a nice touch for the price.

Alternatives to the Maruti Suzuki Brezza

Maruti Suzuki Brezza — frequently asked questions

Is the Maruti Brezza available with a diesel engine?

No. The current Brezza is offered only with a 1.5-litre petrol engine, including a factory-fitted CNG option. Maruti discontinued diesel from its lineup, so there is no oil-burner on the menu.

What is the real-world mileage of the Brezza?

The ARAI-rated figure is around 19-20 kmpl for the manual. In real-world driving, expect roughly 14-16 kmpl in the city and a little more on highways. The CNG variant is significantly cheaper to run per kilometre.

Does the Brezza have a sunroof?

Yes, an electric single-pane sunroof is offered on the higher ZXi and ZXi+ trims. It is one of the features added with the current generation launched in 2022.

How many airbags does the Brezza come with?

The Brezza comes with six airbags as standard across the range, along with ESP, ABS with EBD, a rear-view camera and ISOFIX child-seat mounts.

Should I choose the manual or automatic Brezza?

For mostly city driving with frequent traffic, the six-speed torque-converter automatic is worth the premium for comfort. If you drive mainly on open roads or want maximum fuel economy and lower cost, the manual is the smarter pick.

Is the Brezza CNG variant worth buying?

If you drive long distances regularly, yes. The CNG variant dramatically lowers fuel bills, though it reduces boot space and offers slightly less performance. For low-mileage city users, the petrol may make more sense.
