Kia Sonet
Feature-loaded compact SUV with engine choices
Kia Sonet review
The Kia Sonet sits in India's busiest segment, the sub-four-metre SUV, and tries to win buyers with sheer choice. You get three engines, multiple gearboxes including a clutchless manual, and a long features list that feels a class above. The 2024 facelift sharpened the styling and added safety kit. It is not the roomiest option here, but few rivals match its variety or cabin polish.
On the road the Sonet behaves differently depending on which engine you pick. The 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol is fine for city errands but runs out of breath on highways, so most enthusiasts gravitate to the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol. That motor, paired with the quick-shifting seven-speed DCT, makes the Sonet feel genuinely brisk and is the pick for anyone who drives a lot. The 1.5 diesel, available with both a six-speed manual and a torque-converter automatic, is the long-distance cruiser and returns the best efficiency.
Inside, Kia has clearly spent its money where buyers can see and touch it. The dual-screen layout, ventilated front seats, Bose sound system, and a sunroof on higher trims give the cabin a premium air. Material quality is good for the price, though the all-black theme can feel dark. The downside is space: rear knee room and the boot are merely adequate, and three adults at the back will feel the pinch on longer trips.
Ride and handling are tuned more for comfort than thrills. The suspension soaks up broken city roads well at moderate speeds, but there is some firmness over sharp bumps, and the lighter steering trades feedback for ease of parking. Build feels solid, and the facelift's added airbags and electronic aids address earlier safety concerns.
Where the Sonet can trip you up is the price walk. The base variants look affordable, but the genuinely desirable features sit in the upper trims, and a fully loaded turbo-petrol or diesel automatic creeps close to mid-size SUV money. Buyers need to be honest about which features they actually need before signing.

Owner reviews
Turbo DCT is a city delight
I picked the 1.0 turbo with the DCT mainly for Bangalore traffic and it has been brilliant. The ventilated seats are a lifesaver in summer and the pull from the engine genuinely surprises people. Only gripe is the rear seat gets cramped when my parents travel with us.
Great diesel for highway runs
We do frequent Pune-Mumbai trips and the diesel manual returns close to 20 kmpl on the expressway. It feels planted at speed and the cabin is quiet. Boot space is just about enough for a weekend, nothing more.
Loaded but pricey on top trims
The features are honestly fantastic for the segment and the touchscreen is slick. But by the time I added the variant I wanted, the on-road price stretched my budget more than expected. Worth it for the kit, just go in with eyes open.

Kia Sonet — frequently asked questions
Which Sonet engine should I buy?
For mostly city use the 1.2 petrol is sufficient, but the 1.0 turbo-petrol is the sweet spot for spirited driving, while the 1.5 diesel suits high-mileage highway users seeking the best efficiency.
Is the Kia Sonet good for a family of four?
Yes for a young family of four it works well, but rear knee room and boot space are modest, so larger families or those who travel with luggage may find it tight.
What mileage does the Sonet deliver in real driving?
Expect roughly 12-14 kmpl from the petrols in city use and around 18-20 kmpl from the diesel on highways, with the turbo sitting in between depending on driving style.
Does the Sonet have a sunroof and ventilated seats?
Yes, a single-pane sunroof and ventilated front seats are offered, but only on the higher trims, so check the variant list before committing.
How safe is the Kia Sonet?
The facelift adds six airbags as standard along with ABS, ESC, and ISOFIX mounts, plus features like a rear camera and electronic aids on upper variants, making it competitive on safety.
What is the service cost like?
Kia service intervals are typically annual or every 10,000 km, and running costs are reasonable; the diesel costs a bit more to maintain but offsets it with better fuel economy for high-mileage owners.
