Mahindra XUV400 EV
Mahindra's everyday electric SUV for India
Mahindra XUV400 EV review
The Mahindra XUV400 is a homegrown electric compact SUV built on the bones of the petrol XUV300 but stretched longer for a bigger boot and a roomier cabin. It targets buyers stepping into electric motoring without going premium, offering two battery choices, peppy single-motor performance and a claimed range that comfortably covers city commutes. Positioned against the Tata Nexon EV, it leans on Mahindra's SUV image and strong straight-line punch rather than badge prestige.
On the move, the XUV400 is genuinely quick off the line. The 148 bhp motor and 310 Nm of instant torque make it one of the faster cars in its segment from a standstill, and that eagerness suits busy city traffic where closing gaps matters more than outright top speed. Three drive modes — Fun, Fast and Fearless — adjust the throttle response, though most owners will leave it in the middle setting for everyday balance. The light steering and tight turning circle make it easy to thread through tight lanes and parking lots.
The cabin is practical rather than plush. There is a decent amount of space front and back thanks to the longer body, and the boot is one of the larger ones in this class, which makes the XUV400 a sensible family choice. However, plastics feel ordinary in places, and earlier cars drew criticism for a basic dashboard. Mahindra has since updated the interior on newer variants with a larger touchscreen, a digital cluster and connected-car features, addressing the most common complaint.
Ride quality is firm but composed, soaking up broken roads reasonably well while keeping body movements in check. The longer EL Pro variant with the bigger 39.4 kWh pack is the one to pick if you do occasional intercity runs, since real-world range lands well short of the ARAI figure once you factor in highway speeds and air-conditioning. Fast charging from a DC unit gets you most of the way in under an hour, but home charging on a regular wall box is an overnight affair.
Where the XUV400 asks for patience is software polish and service consistency. The infotainment and charging app experience has been hit or miss for some owners, and the dealer network is still building EV expertise. It is a likeable, value-focused electric SUV that does the fundamentals well, provided you go in with realistic range expectations.

Owner reviews
Quick and cheap to run
The pickup genuinely surprises people at traffic lights and my running cost has dropped to a fraction of what petrol used to cost me. Range in the city is fine, but on the highway with AC on I plan my charging carefully. Boot is huge for a car this size.
Great value, software needs work
For the price you get a spacious, fast electric SUV that feels solid on bad roads. My only gripe is the connected-car app, which sometimes refuses to show charging status. Service visits have been okay so far but I wish the staff knew EVs better.
Perfect second car for the family
We charge it overnight at home and it handles the school run and office commute without any range anxiety. The cabin is roomy and the ride is comfortable for my parents. I went with the bigger battery and have no regrets for the occasional weekend trip.

Mahindra XUV400 EV — frequently asked questions
What is the real-world range of the XUV400?
Expect roughly 250-300 km in mixed city driving from the 39.4 kWh pack, and a bit less in heavy highway use with AC. The ARAI figure of 456 km is a lab number and not what you will see daily.
How long does it take to charge?
A 50 kW DC fast charger takes the battery from 0-80 percent in roughly 50 minutes. On a 7.2 kW home AC charger, a full charge takes about 6-7 hours, which suits overnight charging.
Which variant offers the best value?
The EL Pro with the 39.4 kWh battery is the sweet spot, giving you the longer range plus the updated features without paying a flagship premium.
Is the XUV400 good for highway trips?
It is capable but plan around charging stops. The smaller boot of charge anxiety eases with the bigger battery, though you should map out fast chargers before long intercity drives.
How does it compare to the Tata Nexon EV?
The XUV400 is quicker and has a larger boot, while the Nexon EV typically edges ahead on interior fit, feature polish and a wider service network. Pricing is competitive between the two.
What warranty does Mahindra offer on the battery?
Mahindra provides a long battery and motor warranty, typically covering the high-voltage pack for several years or a high kilometre limit. Confirm the exact terms with your dealer as they are periodically revised.
