Mahindra Thar
India's icon of go-anywhere lifestyle freedom
Mahindra Thar review
The Mahindra Thar turned a no-nonsense off-roader into one of India's most aspirational lifestyle vehicles. The second-generation model swapped crude utility for a properly built cabin, touchscreen tech and genuine on-road manners, without losing its low-range four-wheel-drive hardware. It remains a body-on-frame machine that climbs rocks and wades through water as happily as it cruises a highway, which is exactly why buyers queue up despite its quirks and waiting periods.
On paper the Thar reads like a contradiction: a hardcore 4x4 that doubles as a fashionable daily driver, and in practice it mostly pulls that off. The 2.0-litre mStallion turbo-petrol is the enthusiast's pick, with strong mid-range shove and a willing automatic, while the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel trades outright pace for relaxed torque and better economy. There's also a more affordable rear-wheel-drive variant with a smaller diesel for buyers who want the look without the full off-road kit. Either way, the ladder-frame chassis and live rear axle mean it feels rugged and unburstable rather than delicate.
Off the tarmac is where the Thar earns its badge. Low-range transfer case, a mechanical locking differential on top trims, generous ground clearance and serious approach and departure angles let it tackle terrain that would strand most rivals. Water wading, steep inclines and broken trails are dispatched with confidence, and the all-terrain tyres only add to the sense of invincibility.
Day to day, though, the compromises show. The ride is bouncy over patchy roads, the tall body leans in corners, road and wind noise are constant companions, and rear-seat access in the three-door is awkward. The two rear seats are best treated as occasional, the boot is tiny with all seats up, and the petrol automatic's real-world fuel economy is thirsty. The cabin, while vastly improved with its touchscreen, connected features and washable interior, still trails car-like SUVs on outright refinement and space.
What keeps the Thar special is character. Few vehicles at this price feel as distinctive, look as good outside a cafe, and remain as capable when the road ends. Build quality and the touchscreen experience have steadily improved, and resale values stay strong. You buy it with eyes open to its practicality penalty, because nothing else delivers this exact blend of attitude and ability.

Owner reviews
Best weekend machine I've owned
I bought the petrol automatic and it's an absolute blast on highways and trails alike. Fuel economy in the city is poor and the rear seats are useless for adults, but every time I park it people stop to look. No regrets.
Capable but not for everyone
The diesel manual is torquey and I've taken it through serious off-road tracks without any drama. The ride gets bouncy on bad roads and noise levels are high, so if you want comfort look elsewhere. As a fun second car it's perfect.
Love the looks, mind the practicality
It's stylish and built like a tank, and the touchscreen and features are decent now. But the boot is tiny and getting into the back is a chore. Service experience has been smooth and resale value is holding up really well.

Mahindra Thar — frequently asked questions
Is the Thar good as a daily driver?
It can be, but with caveats. The improved cabin, touchscreen and automatic options make commuting easier than before, yet the bouncy ride, high noise levels, small boot and cramped rear seats mean it's better suited as a lifestyle vehicle or second car than a family workhorse.
Should I pick the petrol or diesel?
Choose the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol if you want stronger performance and lower running costs are not a priority. Pick the 2.2-litre diesel for better fuel economy and relaxed low-end torque, which also suits off-road crawling. The diesel is the more sensible long-term buy for high-mileage users.
How capable is the Thar off-road?
Very capable. It offers a low-range transfer case, a mechanical locking differential on top variants, high ground clearance and strong approach and departure angles, allowing it to tackle steep climbs, water wading and rough trails that defeat most monocoque SUVs.
What is the seating capacity?
The three-door Thar is a four-seater in hard-top form. The two rear seats are best treated as occasional use for adults due to limited space and awkward access. Buyers needing more room should consider the larger five-door Thar Roxx.
Is the rear-wheel-drive Thar worth it?
The RWD variant lowers the entry price significantly and keeps the iconic looks, but it loses the four-wheel-drive hardware that defines the Thar's off-road appeal. It makes sense only if you want the style and city usability without serious off-roading.
What about waiting period and resale value?
Demand keeps waiting periods variable depending on variant and city, so check with your dealer for current timelines. On the plus side, the Thar enjoys strong resale value, holding its price better than most rivals thanks to its enduring popularity.
