Mahindra Thar Roxx
Real off-roader that fits the whole family
Mahindra Thar Roxx review
The Mahindra Thar Roxx is what happens when India's most iconic off-roader decides to grow up. Stretching the Thar formula into a five-door body, the Roxx retains ladder-frame construction, a proper 4x4 low-range transfer case, and 226 mm of ground clearance while adding rear-seat legroom and a panoramic sunroof that buyers of the original Thar always wished for. It is a genuine dual-life machine: capable enough for weekend trails, civilised enough for weekday school runs.
Mahindra has been careful not to dilute the Thar character while adding length to the body. The Roxx carries over the circular headlamps, wide shoulder line, and upright stance that made the original recognisable at a glance. Up close, the five-door silhouette integrates cleanly, with flush door handles on the rear doors and a roofline that stays surprisingly low given the tall ride height. The proportions work in a way that makes the Roxx look more purposeful than the 3-door rather than simply larger.
Two engines are on offer. The 2.2-litre mHawk diesel produces 150 bhp and 330 Nm — the default choice for most buyers — and it suits city driving and loaded highway runs equally well. The 2.0-litre mStallion petrol nudges peak power to 162 bhp and has a more eager character above 3000 rpm, making it better suited to performance-minded drivers who spend most of their time on tarmac. Both pair with a slick six-speed manual or a well-calibrated six-speed torque-converter automatic. The 4WD system, available from the AX3 L trim upwards, uses a Borg-Warner transfer case with 4H and 4L modes that can be engaged shift-on-fly at up to 80 km/h.
Step inside and the Roxx feels measurably more premium than the short-wheelbase Thar. A 10.25-inch touchscreen dominates the centre stack, flanked by physical toggles for the 4WD modes — the kind of tactile controls that serious off-roaders appreciate. The panoramic sunroof on upper trims floods the cabin with light, and the rear bench finally offers genuine legroom for adults on longer journeys. Mahindra's AdrenoX connected-car suite brings over-the-air updates, remote start, and a smartphone companion app. Fit and finish have improved noticeably over earlier Mahindra products, though some lower door-panel plastics still feel below what the price demands.
On broken ground the Roxx earns its keep. Approach and departure angles remain respectable despite the longer body, the 226 mm ground clearance sees off most obstacles, and the electronic aids — hill-descent control, 4WD traction management, and an electronic locking rear differential on the AX7 L — allow confident exploration well beyond anything a monocoque crossover could attempt. The 5-star BNCAP result addresses the one weakness that kept earlier Thar iterations from being recommended to families. The only genuine off-road trade-off versus the short-wheelbase Thar is a wider turning circle on tight mountain switchbacks, which becomes more noticeable the narrower the trail.

Changes everything about what an off-roader can be
I upgraded from a standard Thar and the Roxx is on another level for daily use. My wife and kids actually enjoy long road trips now that the rear seat has real legroom. The diesel AT combination is brilliantly relaxed in heavy traffic and equally happy on a weekend forest trail.
Great SUV, a few rough edges left to smooth out
The panoramic sunroof and 360-degree camera on the AX7 L are genuinely useful, not just box-ticking features. I dock a star because the rear door-panel plastic quality feels out of place at this price. The connected-car app was sluggish at first but OTA updates have improved responsiveness.
Brilliant off-road, just plan ahead for tight city parking
Took the Roxx through some genuinely demanding terrain in Spiti and it performed without drama — the 4L mode and rear diff lock are not marketing gimmicks. In city the wider turning circle makes tight parking spots a real challenge. Diesel economy holds at about 16 kmpl in mixed driving.

Mahindra Thar Roxx — frequently asked questions
Is the Mahindra Thar Roxx practical for daily city commuting?
Yes, though with awareness. The automatic gearbox and power steering make stop-go traffic manageable, but the wide 1870 mm body and larger turning circle demand more caution in tight urban lanes and multi-storey car parks than a compact SUV would.
Does every variant of the Thar Roxx come with 4WD?
No. The base MX1 is rear-wheel drive only. Shift-on-fly four-wheel drive with a low-range transfer case is available from the AX3 L variant upwards. If off-road capability is important to you, budget for at least the AX3 L trim.
Which engine should I choose — diesel or petrol?
The 2.2L diesel is the better all-rounder: stronger low-end torque, better fuel economy, and well suited to loaded long-distance runs. The 2.0L petrol makes slightly more peak power and has a more willing high-rev character, making it a good pick for buyers who drive mostly in cities or prefer a sportier feel.
What is the boot space in the Thar Roxx?
With all five seats occupied the Thar Roxx offers approximately 438 litres of boot space, adequate for a family weekend trip. Folding the rear seat flat significantly increases load capacity, though the high loading lip requires some effort when handling heavy luggage.
Has the Thar Roxx been crash tested and what did it score?
Yes. The Thar Roxx earned a 5-star rating under Bharat NCAP (BNCAP), India's domestic crash-test programme, making it one of the stronger performers in its segment for both adult and child occupant protection.
What is the typical waiting period for the Thar Roxx?
Due to strong demand since launch, waiting periods have ranged from four to eight months depending on the variant and city. Diesel manual trims in popular colours tend to have the longest queues. Booking early and telling your dealer you are flexible on colour can meaningfully reduce the wait.
