MG Hector
Big, feature-loaded family SUV with presence
MG Hector review
The MG Hector remains one of the largest SUVs you can buy in its price band, and it has built a loyal following on the strength of sheer space and gadgetry. The 2023 facelift sharpened its road presence and added a tall 14-inch touchscreen that dominates the cabin. Available as a five-seat Hector and a longer seven-seat Hector Plus, it targets buyers who want a big, comfortable, tech-rich family hauler without stepping into premium-brand pricing.
On the road, the Hector prioritises comfort over agility. The 1.5-litre turbo-petrol is smooth and adequately punchy in town, and the diesel pulls strongly on the highway with usable mid-range torque, making it the pick for long-distance families. The CVT and DCT automatics keep things relaxed but neither feels especially urgent when you ask for a quick overtake, and the soft, comfort-oriented suspension allows noticeable body roll through corners.
The cabin is where the Hector earns its keep. There is genuinely generous head and legroom, a flat floor, and a boot that swallows family luggage with ease. The 14-inch portrait touchscreen looks dramatic and packs connected-car features, voice commands and a panoramic sunroof, though routing nearly every function through the screen means simple adjustments take more taps than physical buttons would. Material quality is decent for the price, even if a few plastics feel ordinary.
Refinement and ride quality are strong suits, with the SUV soaking up broken roads at city speeds confidently. Fuel economy is the trade-off: the heavy body and large dimensions mean the petrol in particular is thirsty in stop-go traffic. Service network and parts availability have improved over the years but still trail the most established mainstream brands.
Value depends on what you weigh most. If interior space, equipment and a commanding driving position top your list, the Hector delivers a lot of metal and features per rupee. Buyers chasing efficiency, sharp handling or the broadest after-sales reach may find rivals a safer bet.

Owner reviews
Space and comfort win
We bought the diesel for our family of five and the highway comfort is fantastic. There is so much room inside that long trips never feel cramped. The big screen takes getting used to, but I have no regrets.
Great car, watch the mileage
Love the features and the sunroof, and it feels premium for the money. My only complaint is the petrol CVT drinks fuel in Bengaluru traffic. In the city I average barely double digits.
Reliable family hauler
Two years in and it has been dependable for daily commutes and road trips alike. Service costs are reasonable but the nearest MG centre is a bit far from me. Would buy again for the space alone.

MG Hector — frequently asked questions
Is the Hector available in a seven-seater?
The standard Hector is a five-seater. If you need three rows, MG sells the longer Hector Plus, which offers a six- or seven-seat layout.
Petrol or diesel — which should I pick?
Choose the 1.5 turbo-petrol if you mostly drive in the city and run lower yearly kilometres. The 2.0 diesel is the better long-distance and high-mileage choice thanks to stronger torque and better economy.
What kind of mileage does the Hector return?
Expect roughly 11-13 kmpl from the petrol in real-world city use and around 16-18 kmpl from the diesel on highways. The petrol CVT is the thirstiest in traffic.
Does it get a sunroof and connected features?
Yes. Higher trims include a panoramic sunroof, a large portrait touchscreen, voice commands and MG's connected-car suite with remote functions via a smartphone app.
How safe is the MG Hector?
It comes with multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, a reverse camera and ISOFIX mounts. Higher variants add more airbags and driver-assistance features.
How is MG's after-sales service?
MG's network has expanded steadily across Indian cities, with reasonable service costs. Coverage is still thinner than long-established brands, so check for a nearby service centre before buying.
