Mahindra Scorpio N
Bold body-on-frame SUV with serious capability
Mahindra Scorpio N review
The Scorpio N is Mahindra's reinvention of its long-running SUV nameplate, built on a tough ladder-frame chassis but dressed in a far more modern, premium package. It targets buyers who want genuine off-road ability, commanding road presence and three rows of seating without crossing into luxury pricing. Sold alongside the older Scorpio Classic, the N is the bigger, better-equipped flagship that finally pairs rugged hardware with comfort and tech buyers now expect.
The Scorpio N's biggest leap is how it drives. The 2.2-litre mHawk diesel, especially in its higher 172 bhp tune, feels muscular and refined for a body-on-frame SUV, and the optional 6-speed torque-converter automatic suits its relaxed, long-distance character. The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol is smooth and eager but thirstier, so most buyers will sensibly gravitate to the diesel. Ride quality is a standout: the suspension soaks up broken roads with a planted, mature feel that the old Scorpio never managed.
Inside, the cabin is a clear generational jump. The dual-screen layout, dual-zone climate, Sony audio and a sunroof on top variants make it feel genuinely modern, while the high seating position and chunky design give it real SUV character. The first two rows are spacious and comfortable, though the third row remains best suited to children or short trips, and getting back there isn't especially graceful.
Where the Scorpio N earns its reputation is capability. The 4XPLOR four-wheel-drive system with selectable terrain modes and a mechanical locking differential makes it properly handy off the tarmac, and generous ground clearance helps on rough rural roads. The trade-off is the body-on-frame DNA: there's some body roll through corners, the steering is light rather than communicative, and it never feels as car-like as a monocoque crossover.
Niggles remain. Fit-and-finish, while much improved, isn't quite at the level of pricier rivals, the touchscreen software can lag, and waiting periods have historically been long. Real-world fuel economy is decent for the size but nothing remarkable, particularly with the petrol. None of these undo the core appeal, but they're worth weighing before signing.

Built like a tank, drives like a dream
Took my Z8 L diesel through Spiti without a single complaint. The ride is plush even on terrible roads and the engine has so much pull. Only wish the mileage was a bit better on highways.
Great family SUV with caveats
We bought it mainly for the space and presence, and it delivers. The third row is really only for kids though, and the touchscreen froze a couple of times. Overall very happy for the price.
Diesel auto is the one to get
The torque converter makes city driving effortless and the engine is surprisingly quiet for a Scorpio. Service experience has been decent. Body roll is there but you get used to it quickly.

Mahindra Scorpio N — frequently asked questions
Which engine should I choose, petrol or diesel?
For most buyers the 2.2L diesel makes more sense — it offers stronger torque, better fuel economy and suits the SUV's character. The petrol is smoother and quieter but noticeably thirstier.
Is the Scorpio N a 7-seater?
Yes, top variants are offered in a 7-seat layout with a third row, though some variants come as 6-seaters with captain chairs. The third row is best for children or short journeys.
Does it have 4-wheel drive?
Selected top diesel automatic variants get Mahindra's 4XPLOR four-wheel-drive system with terrain modes and a mechanical locking differential. Lower variants are rear-wheel drive.
What is the real-world mileage?
Expect roughly 12-15 kmpl from the diesel depending on driving and traffic, and lower from the petrol. Highway runs return the best figures.
How safe is the Scorpio N?
It scored a 5-star adult-occupant rating in Global NCAP testing and comes with six airbags, ESC and electronic aids on higher trims, making it one of the safer body-on-frame SUVs.
Is the third row practical for adults?
Not for long trips. Adults will find legroom and access tight, so treat the third row as occasional or child-focused seating rather than daily adult use.
