The Mahindra BE 6e is a watershed moment for Indian electric mobility — a coupe-shaped electric SUV built from scratch on Mahindra's proprietary INGLO platform, with battery choices of 59 kWh and 79 kWh. Unlike competitors that adapt petrol-car architectures, the BE 6e was engineered as an EV from day one, delivering better weight distribution, a lower centre of gravity, and a cabin that maximises every millimetre of its wheelbase. It makes a compelling case that Indian-engineered EVs can stand alongside global benchmarks.

The BE 6e enters a competitive mid-size electric SUV segment but immediately distinguishes itself with a fastback silhouette that has no direct rival at this price in India. Mahindra's INGLO platform, a clean-sheet EV architecture, provides the structural rigidity and packaging efficiency that converted ICE platforms simply cannot match. The long 2,775 mm wheelbase liberates interior space that the sloping roofline might otherwise sacrifice, and the low floor — a benefit of placing the battery pack underneath — gives the cabin an airy, open feel that belies the car's sporty exterior proportions.

On the road, the 79 kWh variant with 282 bhp is the one to have. Throttle response is instantaneous in the way only electric motors can manage, and the 0-100 kmph sprint in approximately 6.7 seconds makes overtaking on expressways a relaxed, one-pedal affair. The 59 kWh version with 228 bhp is no slouch either — it simply trades the last burst of urgency for a lower sticker price. Mahindra has tuned the suspension specifically for Indian road surfaces, and the BE 6e absorbs broken tarmac with genuine composure. The trade-off is that the wider, low-profile tyres on top trims do transmit sharper impacts and generate more road noise than some buyers may expect.

Step inside and the tech story continues to impress. A curved display assembly brings together a 12.3-inch touchscreen running Mahindra's MAIA AI system alongside a matching digital instrument cluster, and the whole interface is clean and responsive. The 16-speaker Harman audio system punches well above what the price suggests. Boot capacity at 455 litres is genuinely usable, and a small frunk at the front handles charging cables neatly. Rear occupants get adequate legroom thanks to the long wheelbase, though the coupe roofline does eat into headroom for anyone above six feet — a real consideration for families with tall teenagers.

Charging remains the honest caveat with any EV at this price point. The 79 kWh pack supports up to 175 kW DC fast charging, which can restore around 100 km of range in roughly 15 minutes at a compatible charger — excellent on paper. In practice, the network of 150 kW-plus chargers outside the top eight metros is still sparse, and Mahindra's own fast-charging rollout is a work in progress. The MIDC-claimed 682 km will translate to a realistic 480-520 km in mixed Indian driving conditions — still plenty for most intercity trips, but buyers who regularly travel through Tier 2 corridors should map charger availability carefully before signing.
