The first-time car buyer's checklist

Ten checks — from test-drive routes to paperwork — that separate a confident purchase from buyer's remorse.

The first-time car buyer's checklist

Buying your first car is exciting, which is exactly why a calm checklist helps. Begin with an honest budget that includes running costs — fuel, insurance, servicing and parking — not just the EMI. A car you can buy is not always a car you can comfortably own.

Shortlist by need before want. Count the people and luggage you carry on a normal week, the kind of roads you drive, and your parking space at home. Those three answers eliminate most of the market instantly.

Test-drive properly. A loop around the block tells you nothing. Drive over rough patches, get up to highway speed if you can, reverse into a tight spot, and sit in the back seat. Notice visibility, the driving position and how much road and engine noise reaches the cabin.

On the paperwork side, confirm the model year and manufacturing date, read the warranty terms, and get the full on-road quote in writing. If you are financing, compare at least two loan offers — a small difference in interest rate adds up over several years. Take your time; a good car will still be there next week.
