MG Astor
The AI-powered SUV with personality
MG Astor review
The MG Astor brought a fresh angle to the compact-SUV space in India: a personal AI assistant on the dashboard, a small radar-driven driver-assistance suite, and styling that feels more upmarket than its price suggests. Sitting on the same platform as the ZS EV, it targets buyers who want gadgets and comfort over outright space. It rivals the Creta and Seltos head-on, leaning into technology and a plush cabin rather than chasing the segment's sales leaders on volume alone.
The Astor's appeal starts the moment you sit inside. The cabin feels richly trimmed for the money, with soft-touch surfaces, a clean dashboard and a rotary-toy AI assistant perched on top that turns to face you when spoken to. The 10.1-inch touchscreen and digital cluster are crisp, and higher trims pack in a Level 2 ADAS suite with adaptive cruise, lane-keep and autonomous braking — features still rare at this price. It's genuinely well-equipped, and the ambience punches above its sticker.
Two petrol engines are offered. The naturally aspirated 1.5-litre is smooth and adequate for city duty but feels strained when you ask for quick overtakes, and the CVT-style automatic amplifies that by holding revs high. The 1.3-litre turbo is the one to have — it's noticeably punchier, pairs with a six-speed torque-converter auto, and makes the Astor feel quick and relaxed on highways. There's no diesel and no strong-hybrid option, which narrows the appeal for high-mileage buyers.
Ride and handling are competent rather than outstanding. The suspension soaks up broken roads well at city speeds and the steering is light and easy to park, though the body leans a fair bit through faster corners. Rear-seat space is adequate for two adults but trails the roomier Creta and Seltos, and the boot is usable rather than generous. Fuel economy from the petrol-only line-up is middling, especially with the automatics in traffic.
Where the Astor stumbles is the ownership picture. MG's service network is thinner than Hyundai's or Kia's in smaller towns, and resale values have historically lagged the segment leaders. The tech-laden image is the draw, but buyers should weigh the long-term costs against that initial feel-good factor.

Owner reviews
The ADAS genuinely helps on highways
I do a lot of intercity driving and the adaptive cruise with lane-keep takes real fatigue off long stretches. The 1.3 turbo has plenty of pull and the cabin still feels premium. Mileage in the city is nothing special, around 11-12 kmpl.
Love the car, service is a worry
The interior quality and that AI assistant are real talking points and everyone who sits in it is impressed. My only gripe is that the nearest MG service centre is far and appointments take time. If you have a dealer nearby, it's a lovely car to own.
Comfortable and loaded, but thirsty
Bought the CVT for city use and it's smooth and easy in traffic, though it gets noisy when you push it. Features for the price are unbeatable. Just wish the fuel economy was better and the back seat a touch roomier for my family.

MG Astor — frequently asked questions
Does the MG Astor have a diesel engine?
No. The Astor is petrol-only, with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated and a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol option. There is no diesel or strong-hybrid variant.
Which Astor variant offers ADAS?
The Level 2 ADAS suite, including adaptive cruise and autonomous emergency braking, is offered on the higher trims paired with the 1.5 engine and select turbo variants. Check the exact trim as features vary.
Is the 1.5 or the 1.3 turbo better?
For city-only use the 1.5 is fine, but the 1.3 turbo is noticeably quicker and more relaxed on highways. Enthusiasts and frequent highway drivers should pick the turbo with the torque-converter automatic.
What is the real-world mileage?
Expect roughly 11-13 kmpl in the city and 15-17 kmpl on highways depending on engine and transmission. The automatics return lower figures in heavy traffic.
How much boot space does the Astor have?
The boot holds about 448 litres, enough for a weekend's luggage for a small family, though rivals like the Creta offer a bit more practicality.
How safe is the MG Astor?
It comes with six airbags, ESC, ABS with EBD and a 360-degree camera on top trims, and the related ZS scored well in Euro NCAP. It's among the better-equipped SUVs for safety in its class.
