Hyundai i20
The premium hatchback that drives like more
Hyundai i20 review
The Hyundai i20 has long been the hatchback you buy when you want a car that feels a class above its price. The current third-generation model leans into that, with grown-up styling, a long features list and a cabin that punches above the segment. It is not the cheapest or most frugal option, but few rivals match its blend of refinement, kit and on-road polish in the daily Indian grind.
On the road the i20 feels mature and planted, with a ride that soaks up broken city tarmac better than most hatchbacks while staying composed at highway speeds. The naturally aspirated 1.2 petrol is smooth and adequate for town use, though it asks to be revved when the car is loaded or climbing inclines. The 1.0 turbo in the N Line transforms the character entirely, adding genuine punch and a sense of urgency that makes it the enthusiast's pick.
Inside, the i20 is where it justifies its premium. The dashboard layout is clean and modern, build quality feels solid, and the equipment count is generous: a 10.25-inch touchscreen, a fully digital instrument cluster on higher trims, a single-pane sunroof, wireless charging and Bose audio all feature. Front-seat comfort is good and the driving position is sorted, though the dark cabin theme can feel a little sombre.
Practicality is decent rather than outstanding. Rear-seat space is fine for two adults but tighter for three, and the sloping roofline eats a little headroom. The 311-litre boot is competitive. Where the i20 lags slightly is rear under-thigh support and the absence of a diesel or strong-hybrid option, which buyers covering big distances may miss.
The trade-off comes at the till. The i20 commands a premium over rivals like the Tata Altroz and Maruti Baleno, and the IMT and DCT automatics, while slick, add cost. Service is widespread and resale is strong, but you do pay for the badge and the polish.

Owner reviews
Feels like a bigger car
I shifted from a Swift and the i20 immediately feels more premium inside. The touchscreen and sunroof are great for the price, and highway runs are quiet and stable. Mileage in the city is around 14-15 kmpl, which is okay rather than great.
Great features, slightly pricey
The feature list is what sold me, and the build quality has held up well. My only gripes are the dark cabin and that the rear seat gets a bit tight with three adults. Service experience at Hyundai has been smooth so far.
N Line is genuinely fun
Went for the 1.0 turbo N Line and have no regrets. The pull above 2000 rpm is addictive and the DCT shifts quickly in traffic. Fuel economy drops if you drive it hard, but that's the price of the smiles.

Hyundai i20 — frequently asked questions
Is the Hyundai i20 available with a diesel engine?
No. The current i20 is petrol-only in India. Hyundai discontinued the 1.5 diesel variant, so buyers covering very high mileage may want to consider alternatives.
Which i20 variant offers the best value?
The Sportz trim is the sweet spot, bundling the key features most buyers want, like the touchscreen and wireless connectivity, without the top-end premium. The IVT automatic is worth it for heavy city use.
What is the difference between the i20 and the i20 N Line?
The N Line uses a more powerful 1.0 turbo petrol with sportier suspension tuning, exterior styling, red accents and paddle shifters. It is the driver-focused version, while the standard i20 prioritises comfort and economy.
How safe is the Hyundai i20?
The i20 offers up to six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, ISOFIX mounts and a rear camera on higher trims. It is a well-equipped hatchback on safety, though buyers should check the latest crash-test ratings.
What mileage does the i20 deliver in real-world driving?
ARAI figures are around 20 kmpl, but expect roughly 13-15 kmpl in city traffic and 17-19 kmpl on highways with the 1.2 petrol. The turbo returns slightly less when driven enthusiastically.
Is the i20 good for tall drivers and families?
Front-seat comfort and the driving position are excellent, even for tall occupants. The rear seat is comfortable for two adults but tighter for three, and the sloping roof slightly reduces rear headroom.
